Groundnuts in Senegal: History and Strategic Importance

Groundnut has deep historical, economic, and social importance in Senegal. During the colonial period, groundnut production became concentrated in the central region known as the Groundnut Basin, where cash-crop agriculture took root and shaped rural livelihoods, trade routes, and agro-industrial development.

For decades, groundnut was one of the pillars of Senegal’s export economy and a key input for edible oil processing, animal feed, and rainfed farming systems.

Historically, groundnut was treated mainly as a cash crop. But in Senegal, it has always been more than a commercial commodity. It supports rural livelihoods, provides household income, contributes to soil fertility through crop rotation, and plays an important role in local diets. Its nutritional value - including its high protein and oil content - has made it increasingly important as a food security crop, not only as an export or industrial crop.

Today, this history creates both opportunity and responsibility. Senegal has the legacy, land, farmer knowledge, and market recognition to remain a major groundnut producer. However, the sector’s ability to compete now depends on improving seed quality, raising yields, stabilizing production volumes, increasing oil content, and building a reliable supply base for value-added processing. SavanaNut is positioned at this critical intersection between Senegal’s groundnut heritage and its next phase of modernization.
